Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is used as a glue/binder in many fused glass products. Available in powdered form from most ceramic suppliers, CMC is inexpensive, non-toxic and burns relatively cleanly. See "liquid stringer" for an example of one way in which CMC is used.
